Early Childhood & Life

James Joseph Bulger Jr. was the second of six children born to Irish Roman Catholic immigrants to the United States on September 3, 1929 in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

James Joseph Bulger Sr., his father, was a longshoreman and union labourer. Tragically, his father lost an arm in a workplace accident, and the family was forced to relocate to a public housing complex in South Boston.

He lived on the streets and tried to join the circus when he was 10 years old, which led to his eventual becoming a robber and street fighter while his brothers excelled in academics.

Offences & Incarceration

When he was arrested for delinquency at the age of 14, his criminal career officially began. On allegations of thievery, assault, and battery, he joined the street gang “Shamrocks” and was sentenced to five years in a juvenile reformatory.

He joined the US Air Force and served in Kansas and Idaho after being released in 1948. But when he showed his true colours, he was imprisoned in 1950 for taking a leave of absence without authorization but was later dismissed on good terms in 1952.

His criminal offences grew after his return to Massachusetts, beginning with his 1956 arrest for bank robbery. He served 25 years in federal prison until being freed in 1965.

He returned to South Boston and started working as Donald Killeen’s enforcer. He joined the Winter Hill Gang following the murder of Killeen in 1972, where he developed into a cunning, brutal mobster.

In addition to shooting Buddy Leonard and Edward Connors, he also killed Paulie McGonagle, Tommy King, and Spike O’Toole, all of the Mullen gang’s rivals.

He provided information about the Italian mafia while working as an FBI informant between 1975 and 1990, using this position to get rid of his associates who he believed to be a threat to him.

When his brother William Bulger was elected as the State Senate’s president in 1978, he used that position to his advantage in a number of his murderous plots.

Howie Winter and Stephen Flemmi took control of the Winter Hill Gang in 1979 after he was arrested for rigging horse races. This led to an increase in narcotics trafficking, loan sharking, and bookmaking generally.

He, Flemmi, and Weeks engaged in open loan sharking, truck hijacking, trafficking, and extortion during the 1980s with the help of FBI agent John Connolly and Lt. Richard J. Schneiderhan.

He and Flemmi planned Roger Wheeler’s murder in May 1981 as part of a money-laundering investigation. John Martorano, a hitman for the Winter Hill Gang, shot Wheeler.

In order to prevent John Callahan, the previous president of World Jai Alai, from assisting investigators in the Jai Alai conspiracy, he gave Martorano the order to kill him.

With the arrest of underboss Gennaro Angiulo in 1986, he assisted the FBI in bringing an end to his main competitor Italian-American Patriarca crime family. Subsequently, he assumed control of the Boston area’s criminal underworld.

After the Drug Enforcement Administration, Massachusetts State Police, and Boston Police Department began looking for him, he departed Boston in December 1994 with Theresa Stanley.

In January 1995, he decided against going back to Boston after learning of Flemmi’s arrest via his police detective brother, Michael Flemmi.

After travelling between places for three weeks, he finally encountered Kelvin Weeks in Dorchester, from which he had escaped with Catherine Elizabeth Greig, a mistress.

On June 22, 2011, he and Greig were detained in Santa Monica, California, after a Bulger Fugitive Task Force was established to apprehend him and put an end to his rule over the criminal underworld.

On July 6, 2011, after a trial, he was found guilty of all 48 charges against him, including 19 killings, perjury, extortion, the sale of illegal drugs, money laundering, possession of firearms, and others.

Greig confessed to hiding Bulger using false names on June 12, 2012, and was given an eight-year prison term.

On November 14, 2013, he was given two life sentences plus five years in prison after being charged with 31 crimes, including 11 murders. He is presently a prisoner at the Coleman II United States Penitentiary in Sumterville, Florida.

Major Offenses

He threatened to kill Kevin Weeks’ companion and gunned down bookmaking mobster Louis Litif in 1980 after he refused to pay his profit share. He also killed two other people without his consent.

In 1982, when cocaine dealer Edward Brian Halloran told the FBI he had information about the Roger Wheeler murder plot and turned witness in the killing of Louis Litif, he shot dead Halloran and his friend Michael Donahue.

Personal Legacy & Life

He first met Lindsey Cyr, a Massachusetts waitress and fashion model, in 1966. The two went on to live together and had a common-law marriage for 12 years.

In 1967, the couple gave birth to a son, Douglas Glenn Cyr. He passed away in 1973 at the age of six from Reye’s Syndrome, an allergic response to an aspirin injection.

After Bulger and Cyr broke up, he started dating Theresa Stanley, a divorcee from South Boston who has a large family.

The friendship between Whitey and Billy Bulger, who were on opposing sides of the law, served as the basis for the “Brotherhood” television series, which was shown on Showtime from 2006 to 2008.

His trials were the focus of Joe Berlinger’s 2014 documentary “Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger.”

The 2015 release of “Black Mass,” directed by Scott Cooper and featuring Johnny Depp as Bulger and based on the 2012 book “Black Mass” by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, is anticipated.

Trivia

Because of his white-blonde hair as a child, he disliked the name “Whitey” and preferred the names “Jimmy,” “Jim,” or even “Boots” because of his passion for cowboy boots.

After attempting to break out of the Atlanta prison in November 1959, he was imprisoned for three years on Alcatraz Island off the coast of San Francisco.

He was mentioned 14 times on the crime programme “America’s Most Wanted: America Fights Back,” according to records from 2007.
