Danielle Collins struggled to play last year due to suffering from endometriosis. The 28-year-old, however, stunned everyone in January 2022 by appearing in the Australian Open women’s singles final.

Endometriosis is a benign growth that develops on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other areas of the lower abdomen or pelvis when tissue similar to the uterus’ lining grows outside of the womb, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office on Women’s Health.

At the Australian Open last year, she had “contraction-like cramps” in her low pelvis and abdominal muscles, which led her to trip and fall to the ground. A doctor had to rush over to help her.

She had emergency surgery in April 2021 for the ailment after suffering from agonizing pain for years.

I had so many doctors tell me that painful periods were common, she said in a conversation with the Women’s Tennis Association. The situation grew worse and worse.

Four separate cuts were made to her abdominal wall during the procedure. Her ovary underwent surgery to remove a “tennis ball-sized cyst” that was pressing on a spinal nerve and pushing her uterus out of place, according to Collins.

At the 2022 Australian Open, she competed in the final of a major singles tournament for the first time.

At the University of Virginia, where Collins competed in tennis collegiately, she won the NCAA singles championship twice, in 2014 and 2016, during her sophomore and senior years, respectively. She ended her collegiate career at Virginia in 2016 as the player ranked number one in all of college tennis. Her breakthrough came at the 2019 Australian Open, where she reached the semifinals and won a match against Angelique Kerber, the world’s No. 2 player, on her way there. Career

2022: First Grand Slam final, top 10 debut and American No. 1

After overcoming the 19th seed Elise Mertens to become the third American woman to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Collins advanced to the semifinals for the second time to continue her run. It was the second year in a row that three different Americans had a chance to compete at this level of the event. She advanced to the semifinals by winning the quarterfinal match against Alizé Cornet in straight sets. She won her semifinal match against Iga Witek in straight sets as well, which allowed her to progress to her maiden Grand Slam final, where she competed against the world’s No. 1 player, Ashleigh Barty. witek stated that Collins struck the “…fastest balls I have ever played in a match.” Witek was referring to the balls that he played. Collins was defeated in the championship match by a score of 3-0 even though she held a lead of 5–1 in the second set. As a direct result of her performance, Collins broke into the top 10 for the first time and established herself as the best female player in the United States.

In the second round of the French Open, she was defeated by fellow American Shelby Rogers in a match that was decided in straight sets. At Wimbledon, Collins was defeated by Marie Bouzková in the first round in a match that went to three sets.  At the same tournament, she advanced to the quarterfinals of a major in doubles competition for the second time in her career and subsequently made it all the way to the semifinals of a major for the first time in her career. World TeamTennis

2019 marked Collins’ debut with Billie Jean King’s Philadelphia Freedoms in World TeamTennis, where she competed for the first time. She was on the roster of the Orlando Storm when the 2020 season began on July 12, but she was kicked out of the league when she left the state and violated the COVID-19 safety protocols. The season began again on July 12.

Collins plays in an extremely aggressive manner, which has earned him accolades like as “fearless” and “ferocious,” in addition to “fun to watch.” As a result of her potent serve and her ability to execute powerful groundstrokes on both wings, she is considered to be one of the most powerful hitters on the WTA Tour. Collins is Walter and Cathy’s daughter. Collins was named after her father. 2012 was the year that she received her diploma from Northeast High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her junior rating was high enough during her time competing for her high school, and the University of Florida offered her a scholarship because of it (UF). After completing her first year of college, she made the decision to transfer to the University of Virginia (UVA). Both in her sophomore and senior years, she was victorious in the singles competition held by the NCAA.

She decided to pursue a degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences Exploratory when she was a first-year student at the University of Florida.

Collins received a bachelor of arts degree in media studies and a business degree from the University of Virginia. She continued her education at the University of Florida (UF) and graduated with a master’s degree in sports management through a WTA-affiliated program.
