Political Career
Samy Vellu’s political career began when he and Govindaraj joined the Batu Caves MIC branch in 1959, when he was 23 years old. After five years, he was put in charge of the party and made a member of the Selangor MIC committee. He got a lot of attention when he climbed up the flagpole at the Indonesian embassy, took down the flag, and set it on fire. He was found guilty in court and given an RM2 fine. On the front pages, he was called Hero Malaysia.
From September 1974 to March 2008, he served as the MP for Sungai Siput for eight terms. He was the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Housing from 1978 to 1979. Then he was Minister of Works from 1979 to 1989. Then, from 1989 to 1995, he was Minister of Energy, Telecommunications, and Posts. From 1995 to March 2008, he was the Minister of Works. In March 2008, he lost his seat in parliament to Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj of the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM), but he ran for office again in March 2008 as a candidate for the People’s Justice Party (PKR).
During his time, he was the second longest-serving minister after Rafidah Aziz.

Vellu was born in Kluang, Johor, and he comes from India. He had a son with his wife, Indrani Samy Vellu. He was a chartered architect and a member of both the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Malaysian Institute of Architects.
