Political Career

Samy Vellu’s political career began when he and Govindaraj joined the Batu Caves MIC branch in 1959, when he was 23 years old. After five years, he was put in charge of the party and made a member of the Selangor MIC committee. He got a lot of attention when he climbed up the flagpole at the Indonesian embassy, took down the flag, and set it on fire. He was found guilty in court and given an RM2 fine.
