Native To Japan: Koko Started Dancing At Age Two And A Half

According to the Dance & Co. website, where she used to work, Koko was born as Koine Iwasaki on June 26, 1997, in Kanagawa, Japan. At age two, she and her family moved across the ocean to the United States. When Koko was two and a half years old, she started taking dance classes in South Florida, where she stayed for the next 18 years.

Koko learned ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop while she was at Dance & Co. She had never done ballroom dancing before, though. When she was 21 and joined season 14 of So You Think You Can Dance, she met her current boyfriend, Kiki Nyemchek. He taught her everything she knows about ballroom dancing, and ever since then, she’s been obsessed with that style of dancing.

The Japanese native dancer posted a picture of a memorial for Yuriko Iwasaki, whom she called “Baba,” on Instagram on January 15, 2015.
