Sig Hansen: Who Is He?

Captain Sigurd Jonny Hansen, who was born in the United States on April 28, 1966, is currently in charge of the fishing boat FV Northwestern. Hansen has appeared in every season of the 2005-starting documentary television program Deadliest Catch. Hansen also assisted in the production of the show as a technical advisor.

Sig Hansen’s Initially in Life

His brothers’ names are Norman and Edgar, and he is the oldest of their three kids. In Seattle, Sigurd Jonny Hansen was born. He is the oldest son out of three. These fishermen were the forefathers of their father, Sverre Hansen, who came from a long line of Norwegian fishermen. The first fishermen in Alaska to pursue opilio crabs were his father and grandparents. This was done to provide crab boats the chance to make money all year long rather than only during the early or late seasons. He began fishing and helping out on his family’s boat when he was 14 years old.

After finishing high school, he started fishing year-round, devoting an average of 10 months of the year to the Bering Sea and the state of Alaska. He also occasionally went mackerel and cod fishing in Norway throughout the summer. He used to skip school when he was younger so he could go fishing more frequently.

Career of Sig Hansen

Hansen started as a deckhand on his father’s yacht and worked his way up through the ranks before he was of adolescent age. He was upgraded to “relief skipper” status at the age of 22, when he took over for other captains on the Northwestern and completed short-haul assignments on other vessels in the fleet. At the age of 24, he assumed full-time control of the Northwestern. Over the years, the boat has grown to be a top producer while keeping a stellar safety record. The vessel has never had a single death at sea in the nearly 20 years Hansen has been in command, and its rate of major injuries is also far lower than that of other boats in the Bering Sea fleet.

The Northwestern won the final derby seasons in 2005 for King Crab and 2006 for Opilio, earning the titles for the featured boats’ largest pounds captured and highest earnings. As of 2011, throughout the king and opilio crab seasons as well as the pot cod fishery, Hansen is the Northwestern’s full-time skipper. American reality television program The Deadliest Catch airs on the Discovery Channel. His two younger brothers, Edgar and Norman, are the deck boss and deckhand, respectively.

After being published in March 2010, Hansen’s debut book, North By Northwestern: A Seafaring Family on Deadly Alaskan Waters, swiftly rose to the top of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. Hansen’s first book was published because of this. Hansen and Mark Sundeen worked together to write North By Northwestern.

On April 29, 2010, Hansen made a guest appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, which was broadcast live. A Facebook page was set up by Leno’s crew to solicit support for his selection for the show. Hansen made the decision to leave the cast of Deadliest Catch after the sixth season in September 2010. He made it known during the program that he wanted to compete in the upcoming season of the popular ABC reality competition Dancing with the Stars. On the other side, it was confirmed that Hansen will be returning to the show in October 2010.

In the Disney Pixar movie Cars 2, he provided the voice of Crabby, a boat that was based on the Northwestern. He took part in The Celebrity Apprentice’s 14th season competition.

Hansen received this accolade in the same year that Bobby Vee and Doc Severinsen, the bandleader of the Tonight Show and the vocalist, were inducted into the Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame.

Sig Hansen’s Private Life

Nina and Mandy, two children that Hansen and his wife June were able to adopt, are now living with them in Seattle. From a previous marriage, Hansen has a biological daughter named Melissa. Mandy, his eldest child, has joined him on board the Northwestern as his acting captain. Jackson, Hansen’s grandson, and Sailor Marie, his granddaughter, are both products of his marriage to Nina. Sailor Marie, his grandchild from his union with Mandy, is also his descendant. Mandy speaks Norwegian with ease, just like her brothers do. Sig Hansen’s Norwegian parents spoke it at home, thus she picked up the language before learning English. Sig Hansen attended Shorewood High School and is a supporter of the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks, both of which have their home stadiums in Seattle.

In March 2016, Hansen suffered a heart attack, which was recorded on video and shown on the Discovery Channel program Deadliest Catch. The following season, after recuperating from the heart attack, he went fishing again.

Early in October 2018, just before the king crab season, he had a terrible allergic reaction to an antibiotic, which resulted in a second heart attack. Before he could resume fishing and participate in the 15th season of the show, he had to receive a medical clearance.

In the month of July 2019, it was revealed that June Hansen had received a cancer diagnosis. There was no way to get any information or updates.
