With the Kelowna Spartans of the BCHL in 1994–1955, Mitchell started his junior hockey career, recording 11 points in 42 games. He played with Kelowna for one season before transferring to the SJHL’s Melfort Mustangs. Following his first season with Melfort in 1995–96, he was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the eighth round, 199th overall, of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. New Jersey Devils (1999–2001)

After his second season with Clarkson, Mitchell made the choice to forgo his remaining two college seasons of eligibility in favor of turning pro and joining the New Jersey Devils organization.

In his first full season with the Wild in 2001–2002, he recorded three goals and 13 points in 68 games, earning $550,000 from his initial rookie contract with the Devils.
