Day guided the Buckeyes to a perfect 12-0 regular season record in 2019, his first year as the team’s full-time head coach. This was the team’s first unbeaten regular season since 2013. According to the 2019 preseason poll, the Buckeyes were projected to place second in the Big Ten East Division. However, after defeating Penn State on November 23, they clinched the division and qualified for the Big Ten Championship, which they went on to win by defeating Wisconsin 34-21.
