The 85-year-old actress Mary Alice has passed away. She received praise for her role in The Matrix Revolutions as The Oracle.

A representative for the NYPD verified that Alice passed away on July 27 at her home. Mary’s cause of death is still unknown, and specific funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.

The Matrix Revolutions’ Mary Alice

In the third entry of the Matrix series, Mary Alice played The Oracle. The role was initially portrayed by Gloria Foster, who passed away in 2001, in the first two movies. But after her passing, Alice was offered the part.

The Oracle claimed to be able to look beyond her own decisions, stating that nobody, not even herself, could look beyond a decision they don’t comprehend. It was eventually made clear that because Neo has free will and fights the Architect, she cannot use her power to determine what would happen to him.

The Matrix Revolutions, which The Wachowskis directed, was released on November 5, 2003. Despite earning mediocre reviews compared to the prior two movies, the movie was a box office hit.

The Acting Career of Mary Alice

The actress first rose to prominence in the NBC sitcom A Different World as Leticia “Lettie” Bostic, and then in the musical drama Sparkle as Effie Williams.

Mary, who was born on December 3rd, 1936, began performing on stage at a very young age. When she was two years old, her family moved to Chicago, and she later earned a degree from Chicago Teacher’s College. She then started working as a teacher in an elementary school.

Alice resumed acting in the 1960s and appeared in three of Douglass Turner Ward’s plays. She washed the cast members’ clothes between 1969 and 1973 while simultaneously acting in various performances at the La MaMa Experimental Theater Club in Manhattan’s East Village.

In addition to continuing to perform on stage, the actress made her film debut in 1974’s blaxploitation drama The Education of Sonny Carson. In TV episodes like Police Woman, Sanford and Son, All My Children, and A Different World, she made an appearance.

For the 1993 drama series I’ll Fly Away, Alice won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She appeared in movies like Down in the Delta, The Inkwell, and Malcolm X. In 2000, the actress was honoured with induction into the American Theater Hall of Fame.

She not only played The Oracle in The Matrix Revolutions, but she also played the same role in Enter the Matrix.

In 2005, the actress decided to stop acting.
