The gruesome killing spree committed by the notorious serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer between the years 1978 and 1991 continues to terrify both the general public and enthusiasts of real crime. After his arrest in 1991, his upbringing came under intense scrutiny as investigators looked for any clues that might have explained how he got to be the murderer that he was.
In the recently released documentary entitled Jeffrey Dahmer: Mind of a Monster, which was produced by Discovery, Dahmer’s parents discuss the serial killer’s youth as well as his upbringing.
Who are Jeffrey Dahmer’s parents?
Lionel and Joyce Dahmer have been very forthcoming about their son’s upbringing, even going so far as to state that they were unaware of their son’s health issues when he was younger. They assert that they brought him up in a typical family environment, and that, despite Lionel and Joyce’s divorce and separation, he was not harmed as a youngster. This is in contrast to the majority of serial killers.
Lionel admits in his book A Father’s Notebook that he was largely absent during Dahmer’s younger years because of his status as a student pursuing a degree in chemistry. He also admits that despite the fact that he thought he was doing the boy no harm while he was raising him, he feels that he bears some of the responsibility for Dahmer’s outcome. Dahmer was convicted of multiple murders, including the murders of his mother and step
During an appearance on Larry King Live, Lionel stated, “I genuinely want to advise parents what I think they should look for in growing their children.” Lionel made this statement in response to a question from the host.
He explained that the sole red flag from Dahmer’s upbringing was the fact that he spent his time between the ages of 12 and 14 riding around country roads, collecting roadkill, and storing a stash of the dead animals. This information was not discovered by him or Joyce until much later.
Lionel stated that there would have been a warning sign for him if he had been aware of the roadkill. “I would have quickly taken action and intervened in the situation. However, before that, there wasn’t much of anything to speak of.”
The fact that Dahmer was able to keep his parents and friends in the dark throughout his childhood was probably due to the fact that his father recalled his son as being incredibly shy as a child.
Lionel cautions the other parents, saying, “Don’t underestimate shyness.”
Lionel is also profiled in the book Jeffrey Dahmer: The Mind of a Monster, which details Dahmer’s childhood, which was largely typical, as well as Lionel’s efforts to assist his son when he began to recognise warning signs.

Following the conclusion of the trial, he was found guilty of 15 of those killings and received 15 separate life sentences. This ensured that he would never be eligible for release under any circumstances. Jeffrey Dahmer Wiki
Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was an American serial killer and sexual offender who was responsible for the murder and dismemberment of seventeen males and male children between the years of 1978 and 1991. He was born on May 21, 1960, and passed away on November 28, 1994. He was also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster. A significant number of his later killings entailed necrophilia, cannibalism, and the long-term preservation of body parts, most frequently the skeleton in its whole or a portion of it.
Dahmer was ruled to be legally sane during his trial, despite the fact that he had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, and a psychotic disorder. On February 17, 1992, he was found guilty of fifteen of the sixteen homicides he had committed in Wisconsin and was sentenced to fifteen sentences of life imprisonment for each of the convictions. Later on, Dahmer was found guilty of committing yet another murder in the year 1978 in the state of Ohio and was given a sixteenth term of life in prison for his crime.
Christopher Scarver, a fellow inmate at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin, was responsible for Dahmer’s death, which occurred on November 28, 1994. Scarver beat Dahmer to death.
Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the first of two sons to be born to Joyce Annette, who worked as an instructor for teletype machines, and Lionel Herbert Dahmer, who studied chemistry at Marquette University and then worked as a research chemist. Lionel Dahmer had German and Welsh ancestry, and Joyce Dahmer had Norwegian and Irish ancestry. Both of the Dahmers were of Scandinavian descent.
According to a number of accounts, Dahmer did not receive adequate care when he was a young child.
However, other sources suggest that Dahmer was generally doted upon as an infant and toddler by both of his parents. His mother was known to be tense, greedy for both attention and pity, and argumentative with both her husband and their neighbours. Other sources suggest that Dahmer was generally doted upon as an infant and toddler by both of his parents.
Lionel’s university studies kept him away from home much of the time as Dahmer entered the first grade; when he was home, his wife, a hypochondriac who suffered from depression, demanded constant attention and spent an increasing amount of time in bed. Dahmer entered the first grade. Lionel’s university studies kept him away from home much of the time. It is known that she tried to take her own life at least once with the help of equanil. Because of this, neither parent spent a lot of time with their son, and he later recalled that, even at a young age, he felt “unsure of the solidity of the family.” He recalled the extreme tension and numerous arguments that occurred between his parents during his formative years. Consequently, neither parent devoted much time to their son.
Late teens and early 20s: first murder
Murder of Steven Hicks
In 1978, three weeks after he had graduated from high school, Dahmer committed his first murder. On June 18, Dahmer picked up a hitchhiker who introduced himself as Steven Mark Hicks. Hicks was close to turning 19 at the time. Dahmer used the promise of alcohol to entice the young man to come to his place. Hicks, who had been hitchhiking to a rock festival at Chippewa Lake Park, Ohio, consented to follow Dahmer to his house on the condition that he would share “a few beers” with Dahmer once they were alone in the house. Hicks had been on his way to the event.
According to Dahmer, the sight of Hicks standing by the roadside without his shirt on aroused his sexual instincts. However, as soon as Hicks started talking about girls, Dahmer realised that any sexual advances he made would be rejected. Dahmer bludgeoned Hicks with a 10-pound (4.5 kg) dumbbell. He later stated that he struck Hicks twice from behind with the dumbbell as Hicks sat upon a chair. When Hicks fell unconscious, Dahmer strangled him to death with the bar of the dumbbell, then stripped the clothes from Hicks’ body before exploring his chest with his hands, then masturbating as he stood above Hicks’ body. Dahmer
The next day, Dahmer dissected Hicks’ body in his basement. After that, he buried the remains in a shallow grave in his backyard. Several weeks later, he unearthed the remains and separated the flesh from the bones. He then dissolved the flesh in acid and flushed the solution down the toilet. Finally, he crushed the bones with a sledgehammer and scattered them in the woods behind the family home.
