Early years
During the years 2016 through 2020, Sims participated in high school football at Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Since he was a sophomore on the squad, he has held the position as starting quarterback for the team. Willie Taggart, who was the head coach of the Florida State Seminoles at the time, drew him in. He had originally hoped to play college football for the Miami Hurricanes, but the team did not show interest in him. Instead, he chose to play for the Florida State Seminoles. He announced his intention to attend Florida State in February 2019, with the expectation that he will serve as James Blackman’s backup quarterback. In the latter part of that year, he took part in a competition for quarterbacks called Elite 11. On December 11, when Florida State fired Taggart and hired Mike Norvell as the new head coach, he reneged on his commitment to play for the Seminoles. On December 18, he signed with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. In the end, Sims was presented with over a dozen scholarship offers from schools competing in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Among these institutions were Florida State, Georgia Tech, and the Maryland Terrapins. In January of 2020, he participated in the Under Armour All-America Game, which was an all-star game for high school football, and he was a member of the squad that ended up winning.
Mike Sims-Walker, Sims’ uncle, was a football player in the National Football League for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played for the Jaguars throughout his time in the NFL.
College career
Georgia Tech
Freshman season
Tobias Oliver, the team’s former quarterback, was shifted to cornerback at the end of the 2019 season, leaving the quarterback position open. During the offseason, Sims, Tucker Gleason, James Graham, and Jordan Yates competed against each other to earn the cornerback position. Although before to the start of the season, the team declined to comment on the matter, it was widely believed that Graham and Sims were the two most qualified candidates for the post. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution made the announcement that Sims will be the starting quarterback for the team on September 11. On September 12, he made his debut for the college team, guiding the Yellow Jackets to a 16–13 victory over the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium. Sims racked up a total of 277 passing yards while completing 24 of 35 passes and gaining 64 yards on the ground. Since Reggie Ball in 2003, Sims is the first true freshman quarterback for the Yellow Jackets to play in a season opener and the first to win a season opener. He also became the first to win a season opener with this game. As a result of his performance, Sims was honored as the rookie of the week by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), as well as the true freshman of the week by 247Sports.com. Additionally, he was included on the weekly lists published by the Davey O’Brien Award and the Manning Award. After this initial performance, the Yellow Jackets went on to suffer two losses, one against the UCF Knights by a score of 49–21 and another to the Syracuse Orange by a score of 37–20. During the second game, Sims threw four passes that were intercepted.
Sophomore season
During his second season, Sims displayed some growth as a quarterback, as seen by the fact that he threw for 1,468 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions while also rushing for 372 yards and scoring 4 touchdowns in 5 starts. However, he split the starting quarterback duties with freshman Jordan Yates as the Yellow Jackets finished with a record of 3-9 and were not eligible for a bowl game for the second year in a row.
