Early years

Rodger and Sheryl Carr’s youngest child, Carr, was born in Bakersfield, California. Before moving to Sugar Land, Texas, in 2002, when his elder brother, David Carr, was selected first overall by the then-expansion Houston Texans, he and his family were residents of Bakersfield. Carr attended Bakersfield Christian High School for his final year after returning to the city with his family.

At Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, Carr’s high school football career got underway. He spent his first year on the freshmen squad before switching to the varsity team as a sophomore as the backup quarterback. A preseason injury to another quarterback forced him into the starting quarterback position despite his lack of preparation.

Carr improved gradually while serving as the Clements High School Rangers’ starter. Carr was the first member of the 2009 class to join the program.

College career

2009 and 2010 seasons

Carr chose Fresno State, where his brother David also played quarterback, as an early-entry freshman for the spring semester of 2009 so he could take part in spring football with the Bulldogs. True freshman Carr was “in the mix” for the starting quarterback job as late as mid-July, according to former Fresno State head coach Pat Hill. However, Hill declared that junior Ryan Colburn would start in place of Carr just days before the 2009 season got underway in September. Carr had a limited role as a freshman, playing in only five games.

In 2010, Colburn remained the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback. Carr replaced Fresno State’s starting quarterback in the autumn of 2011 after redshirting the 2010 campaign.

2011 season

In the 2011 Bulldogs’ 4-9 campaign, Carr earned the right to start. In the Bulldogs’ defeat against California to open the season, he made his debut as a starter. Carr had a breakthrough performance in a win over Idaho three weeks later, compiling 371 passing yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. In a loss to New Mexico State six games later on November 12, he had a season-high 391 passing yards and three touchdowns. Carr threw for 3,544 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions in the 2011 campaign. In various categories, he was among the Western Athletic Conference’s top passers.

2012 season

Tim DeRuyter, who took over as head coach for Carr when Pat Hill was dismissed, was in place going into the season. Carr assisted in guiding the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record in 2012, a major improvement. Davante Adams, who was a redshirt freshman entering the season, right away established himself as a dependable target for Carr.
